This is a complete round for the German 13mm MG 131 machine gun used in German aircraft during World War II. The MG 131 was developed in 1938 by Rhinemetall--Borsig and produced between 1940 until the end of the war. The MG 131 was designed for use at fixed, flexible or turreted, single or dual mounts in Luftwaffe aircraft. These guns were used in the Messerschmitt Bf 109, the Me 410 Hornisse, Fw 190, Ju 88, Junkers Ju 388, He 177 Greif bomber and many other aircraft. The MG 131 fired electrically primed ammunition in order to sustain a high rate of fire when firing through the propeller arc of a single engine fighter. A pair of MG 131's were used as cowl armament on later models of the Bf 109G and the Fw 190. This round was brought home by a local WWII veteran that picked it up from a deserted German Luftwaffe base his unit occupied. I obtained the round from one of his relatives. It is in good condition. The steel case measures 16.06mm at the shoulder and is 63.98mm in length. The projectile measures 12.83mm in diameter and the exposed section measures 39.21mm in length. The head stamp on the case reads 43 36b DM and another mark I can't decipher. The projectile itself is stamped cpp1 4g 43 and the same mark I can't decipher and has a brick red band around it, The round still retains the primer. This is a nice example of an inert, pretty rare bullet from World War II.
