This is a Model 1851 sword belt plate from the Civil War period. This is probably one of the most recognizable artifacts from the Civil War. The cast brass buckle measures approximately 3 1/4" wide and 2" tall. This one has the integral cast wreath. The plate has a slight bend in the middle, but shows no evidence of being struck. There are no cracks or holes in the plate. It has a beautiful even chocolate patina. The tongue is still present, but the keeper is missing. The plate has no bench mark. This belt plate was recovered near Nancy, Kentucky. On 19 January, 1862 Union forces under the command of Brigadier General George Thomas met Confederate forces under the command of Brigadier General Felix Zollicoffer at the Battle of Mill Springs. This battle resulted in a Union victory, with Union losses being 39 killed and 207 wounded. The Confederate casualties were 125 killed and 404 wounded or missing. Among the dead for the Confederates was BG Zollicoffer. The Battle of Mill Springs was considered the first significant victory for the Union. More importantly, it opened the way for the invasion of middle Tennessee for the Union. It is quite likely that this belt plate was lost during this battle. If you are a collector of excavated items, this iconic belt plate will look perfect with your other dug relics!
