This is a fighting/utility knife that was civilian made but used by the US military during World War II. At the outbreak of WWII there was a critical shortage of equipment of all kinds for the US military. Most of the equipment available was left over WWI period items, and much of it was outdated or unserviceable. The government turned to the commercial market for fighting knifes, and the original Kabar, the PAL RH 36, became legend. Early in the war the majority of these knives were issued to the Marine Corps and Naval aviation personnel headed to the Pacific theater of operations. This is an early knife manufactured by PAL Cutlery Company. It has an overall length of 11", with a blade length of 6". The blade looks to have been left bright, and even now has a bright appearance. The edge has been sharpened. The one side of the blade is stamped RH PAL/MADE IN USA -36. The other side of the blade has no stamp. A single, steel cross guard is firmly attached to the blade and has minimal deflection. The hilt is comprised of narrow leather washers stacked together. At the front and rear of the hilt the washer stack is colored black, yellow, red, yellow and black. The aluminum pommel cap has a nice gray patina. This one comes with a leather scabbard, like most of the early ones did. The scabbard shows plenty of wear and is very stiff. That's mostly due to the scabbard being painted black. Marine and Army personnel were known to have painted the scabbards to help camouflage the bare leather in the jungle. The tip of the scabbard is broken off, but still retained to the scabbard by the stitching. All the stitching is tight and unbroken. The other flaw the scabbard has is the leather strap to secure the hilt to the scabbard, it's broken and missing. If you have a WWII fighting knife collection you're gonna need one of these in it. This has the look of having been there and done it too!
