This is a US Model 1859 carbine thimble used during the Civil War. It was part of the Model 1859 McClellan saddle system designed by General George McClellan. The carbine thimble was attached to the D ring on the right side of the saddle. When the trooper was mounted the barrel of his carbine passed through the socket to keep it from swinging around as the rode. The carbine itself was attached to a leather sling worn over the troopers shoulder. This carbine thimble is made of heavy leather that is sewn together. It has a leather strap that is riveted to the thimble and a black japanned buckle. The leather is dry but still very flexible. The US Cavalry used them all the way up to 1885, when they were replaced by the new Model 1885 boot. If you collect Civil War or early Indian Wars Cavalry, you're gonna need one of these.
