This is a theater made US 2nd Infantry Division 6th Machine Gun Battalion (Marine) patch from World War I. The patch measures 4 3/4" wide and 3 1/2" high. The white five point star and Indian head with war bonnet represent the 2nd Infantry Division, the "Indianhead" nickname for the division. WWI 2nd Infantry Division patches are unique to all other division patches from WWI, as each regiment, some battalion and even some companies have their own patch. The oval shape of the patch represents the 6th Machine Gun Battalion of the United States Marine Corps' 4th Brigade that fought with the 2nd Infantry Division during WWI. The color of purple was designated for machine gun units, battalion and company level. This is a four piece patch, constructed of an Indian head with war bonnet sewn onto a white five point star, in turn sewn onto an oval piece of purple felt that is sewn onto a larger oval of green wool. There is a small amount of moth damage along the bottom center of the patch, in the green and purple parts of the patch. This 2nd Division patch has never been sewn on a tunic. The 2nd Division patch is one the most recognizable patches from WWI. The overall condition of this WWI 2nd Division patch is very good.
