This is an International Maritime signal flag of unknown manufacture and unknown time period. The flag measures 73" high and 91" wide. It is constructed of 2 panels of white cloth with two red stripes in the shape of an X in the center. This flag uses a halyard with wooden toggle to be attached to a mast. The red color of the flag is still very bright and clean, the white field shows some light staining scattered around. There are no major rips or tears in the flag, but there are a couple of small holes, one in the white field and one at the end of a red stripe on the fly end. The flag has no makers label visible, ink stamped or sewn on. These flags are used to signal between ships or between ship and shore. There are twenty six square flags to indicate either a letter of the alphabet a short message. Pennants are used to represent numbers, along with one answering pennant and three substitutes. Only a few colors can be distinguished at sea, red, blue, yellow, black and white. The colors are used only in particular combinations, red and white, yellow and blue, blue and white or black and white. Stand alone colors are red, white and blue. This flag is flown to represent the letter V or to indicate Require Assistance. If you have the wall space, this will work well with your naval collection. You could probably get away with using it for an Alabama state flag too!
