This is a unit photograph of Battery E, 13th Field Artillery Battalion, 24th Infantry Division, stationed at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii in 1936. There are 84 soldiers of the battery pictured, with the officers and NCO's of the unit seated in the front row. The entire unit is dressed in the khaki summer uniform of the early 1930's, to include the tall Cavalry lace up boots authorized for wear in 1930, with the exception of one man. I believe the individual dressed in the new uniform authorized for wear in 1935 to be the battery executive officer, as he is clearly wearing lieutenant's bars. Seated to his left is the battery commander wearing captain's insignia on his epaulettes. The two are seated in the center of the front row. The unit guidon is displayed in the center of the photo in the last row. The 13th Field Artillery was constitued on 1 July, 1916 and organized 1 July, 1917 at Camp Stewart, Texas. It was assigned to the 4th Division during World War I and participated in five campaigns supporting that division. The 13th Field Artillery was assigned to the Hawaiian Division on 1 March, 1921. The division would later be redesignated as the 24th Infantry Division. During World War II the 13th Field Artillery Battalion would be involved in the Central Pacific campaign, the New Guinea campaign with arrowhead, the Leyte campaign with arrowhead, the Luzon campaign with arrowhead, and the Southern Philippines campaign with arrowhead. The image comes in an old wooden frame that measures 21 3/4" wide and 9 3/4" high. The image itself measures 19 1/2" wide and 7 1/2" high. The image has great clarity and shows much detail on the uniforms. It is marked in white along the bottom BATTERY "E" - 13th FIELD ARTILLERY with the date of 1936 under the unit designation. In the bottom right corner of the image in white letters is Schofeld Studio. The only problem areas with the image are along the edges on the sides, where the border is wrinkled and cracked. The top left corner of the glass is also broken. This is a nice pre WWII image of a field artillery unit that would put in some hard fighting in the Pacific Theater of Operations.
