This is an excavated Model 1851 sword belt plate, one of the most iconic pieces of the Civil War. The plate measures 3 1/4" wide and 2" high. The plate is an enlisted man's variant. It has the deepest chocolate patina that I've seen in a while! This one does not come with the keeper. The belt plate is not bench marked. The back side of the plate shows some brass that has taken on a dull golden patina. The plate has some body curve to it. This Union Model 1851 sword belt plate was recovered on private property near the battlefield in Shiloh, Tennessee. It's a nice, honest piece from the Civil War that will go in any collection.
