This is a World War II German High Seas Fleet badge. This badge was established on 30 April, 1941 by the Commander in Chief of the German Navy Grand Admiral Erich Raeder. This award was designated for personnel who served aboard battleships and cruisers, and for those aboard support ships during operations. In order to receive the badge sailors aboard these type ships had to have 12 weeks service on a battleship or cruiser with proof of distinction and good conduct. The length of time could be shorter if the recipient was wounded or killed during the operation, recognized for outstanding achievement in an engagement, if the operation was shorter but successful, the individual's ship was sunk in action or participated in "Rawalpindi" and "Jan Mayen". The badge is die struck, made of a zinc alloy construction and has a solid back. The badge is made up of an oval shaped oak leaf wreath with a Kriegsmarine eagle at the top. The eagle's wings are outstretched, and it clutches a swastika in it's talons. The wreath, eagle and swastika are gilt washed. In the center of the wreath is a German battleship coming dead ahead at full steam, producing a bow wave. The battleship was silver washed, but nearly all of it is missing from this badge. The back side of the badge is maker marked with an underlined f o, representing Friedrich Orth. A vertical pin with hinge at the top and a catch at the bottom of the badge complete the assembly. This is a unique German war badge and I bet you don't have one in your collection!
