This is a Model 1917 German field cap (Kratzchen) from World War I, commonly referred to as a "pill box" cap. This model is made exactly the same as the Model 1907, minus the colored band and piping. The field gray wool body is made up of four panels sewn together to for a seam at the front, rear and each side with a one piece round top. The cap has an off white calico lining with a sweatband of the same type material sewn in separately. The lining has three ink stamps, two of which are very legible. The largest is a black rectangle with B.A.II and 1917 within it. The B.A. II represents the II Armee-Korps Stettin, 1917 the year. Above the clothing department stamp is the size number 57. The third line is illegible and could be either a manufacturer or the soldiers name. Instead of the branch colors of the infantry, artillery etc. being represented on the lower band and piping around the top of the cap, the 1917 used an Apple Green color to help camouflage the cap. There was no longer a need for the masking band to cover the branch color on the lower band. The state of Bavaria used all field gray on the cap instead of the Apple Green. On the front of this "pill box" cap are two cockades, the upper one's colors represent the Reich, the lower one Prussia. Both are securely sewn on, the Prussian cockade is missing a significant amount of the white ring. Overall this is an excellent condition WWI German field cap, showing no damage or stains and all the stitching remains tight and unbroken. This example is a first class candidate for any WWI collection.
