This is a Verwundetenabzeichen, or Wound Badge, in black that was issued to German military personnel who were wounded in action during World War II. On 1 September, 1939, the wound badge was accepted into the German military awards system, Like almost all other German awards, the wound badge could be awarded in three different classes, bronze, silver and gold. The Wound Badge in black was awarded to personnel who had been wounded by hostile action one or two times, or for being frostbitten in the line of duty. It is made of a die struck steel oval shaped base, with a laurel leaf wreath around the edge, encircling an M35 helmet with a canted swastika imposed in the center of the helmet. The helmet rests on two crossed swords that in turn are on top of a pebbled field. The majority of the black enamel paint remains on the face of the badge, with the higher relief areas having been worn off. The reverse of the badge is hollow and has a barrel hinge and catch for the steel wire pin. There is no makers mark or number visible on the back of the badge. This Wound Badge in black will make a great addition to any WWII German medals collection.
