This is a post card image of the School Battalion of the Hampton Institute located in Hampton, Virginia. The card measures 5 1/2" wide and 3 1/2" high. The image shows a battalion sized formation of cadets of the Hampton Institute. The cadets appear to be in the 1902 dress uniform with white gloves. By this time in the school's history there were African American, Native American and white students attending the school. This post card image reflects just that, with a mixture of African American, Native American and white cadets in the picture, the majority being African American. Another example of this same picture is listed as being from 1914. The image is very clear and shows no degradation. The corners are still very square and crisp. It's a nice image of a WWI period School Battalion of the Hampton Institute, a school founded during the Civil War for newly freed slaves that is still educating students and is now known as Hampton University.
