This is a fighting/utility knife that was civilian made but used by the US military during World War II. At the outbreak of WWII there was a critical shortage of equipment of all kinds for the US military. Most of the equipment available was left over WWI period items, and much of it was outdated or unserviceable. The government turned to the commercial market for fighting knifes such as this Imperial made knife. Early in the war the majority of these knives were issued to the Marine Corps and Naval aviation personnel headed to the Pacific theater of operations. This is an early knife manufactured by the Imperial Company of Providence, Rhode Island. It has an overall length of 9 5/8", with a blade length of 5". The blade looks to have been left bright, but now has a dark steel gray patina. The edge has not been sharpened. The one side of the blade is stamped IMPERIAL/PROV. R.I. The other side of the blade has no stamp. A single, steel cross guard is firmly attached to the blade and has a slight deflection. The hilt is comprised of leather washers stacked together. At the front and rear of the grip the steel ends have been painted red. The steel pommel cap has a dark, almost black patina. This one comes with a leather scabbard, like most of the early ones did. The scabbard shows plenty of wear but is still very pliable. All the stitching is tight and unbroken. The only flaw the scabbard has is the leather strap to secure the hilt to the scabbard, it has shrunk over time and will no longer snap closed. If you have a WWII fighting knife collection you're gonna need one of these in it. This has the look of having been there and done it too!
