WWI German Model 1917 Stielhandgranate

This is a German Model 1917 Stielhandgranate "Stick Grenade" from World War I. This hand grenade, known by "Stick Grenade" or "Potato Masher" is one of the most iconic items of World Wat I and World War II. The M1917 grenade would go on to become the Model 1924 grenade, the hand grenade of World War II Germany. This grenade is very simple in design and function, and is considered more a concussion type grenade rather than a fragmentation type. The grenade was composed of a sheet metal cylindrical head which housed an explosive charge and timed fuse, a wooden handle to aid in throwing the grenade and also housed a pull cord with ceramic ball to activate the timed fuse. A flanged screw off cap at the bottom of the stick allowed access to the fuse cord and also helped prevent accidental detonation. A hook was attached to the head of the grenade to facilitate wear on a belt or to hang from barbed wire when used as a bobby trap. The M1917 grenade remains in very good condition. The explosive head retains about 80% of the original gray paint. The white lettered instructions are still visible on the head, and read VOR GEBRAUCH/SPRENGKAPSEL/EINSETZEN/FSP. The first three lines translate to "Before Use, Insert Detonator". The last three letters are either an inspector's initials or possibly the arsenal that produced the grenade. The explosive head will not unscrew from the collar, quite a bit of rust holding it in place. The collar is secured to the wooden handle by four screws. The flanged screw on cap is still present and removes easily from the wooden handle. The pull cord and ceramic ball are no longer with the grenade. The wooden handle is clearly marked in two places. In one area it is stamped 5 1/2 Sek F.S.P., which indicates this grenade was equipped with a 5 1/2 second fuse. The other marking is AKa 11.1.18, indicating the date of manufacture at 1 November, 1918. The wooden handle remains in very good condition, showing no cracks, breaks or repairs. This Model 1917 Hand Grenade will compliment any WWI collection.
