This is a Federal Breast Plate from the American Civil War. It is in great condition considering it was excavated. This one came into the shop with oral history of being recovered in Whitfield County, Georgia. The area was the site of the Battle of Rocky Face Ridge. The battle took place from 7 - 13 May, 1864 and was considered a Union victory. Union soldiers from the Military Division of the Mississippi under the overall command of Major General William T. Sherman were engaged with Confederate soldiers of the Army of Tennessee under the command of General Joseph E. Johnston during the week long battle. Union forces suffered a total of 837 killed, wounded and missing in action. Confederate forces had a total of 600 men killed, wounded or missing during that action. The plate has an overall beautiful dark chocolate patina. There are no nicks or any other damage with this plate. The back retains all the lead. The original wire hooks are still present, but one end has a slight bend to it. There is no visible makers mark on the back. This is an iconic piece that easily identifies with the American Civil War in excellent condition for an excavated example.
