This is an officers smoking cap from the Civil War period. During the Victorian period gentlemen often wore a designated cap when smoking a pipe or cigar. This custom remained alive during the Civil War as well. There are many wartime images showing soldiers, mainly officers, wearing their favorite smoking cap in camp while enjoying a cigar or pipe. This smoking cap is American made, the exterior being constructed of a velvet material with some amazingly intricate floral embroidery around the exterior. The interior is made of polished cotton. The stitching on the inside is all hand stitched and remains strong and unbroken. A very decorative multi color tassel is attached to the top of the cap. This is a very nice example of a Civil War period smoking cap that will fit into any Civil War collection.
