This is a Danish Model 1867 bayonet manufactured by Gebruder Weyersberg of Solingen, Germany. The bayonet was produced for the Model 1867 Remington Rolling Block rifle adopted by the Danish government after their defeat by the Prussians during the War of 1864. The Danish ordered thousands of the Remington made rolling block rifles between 1867 and 1868, but also secured the right to produce the rifle at their Copenhagen Arsenal. This Danish Model 1867 bayonet has an overall length of 26 3/4", with a blade length of 21 3/4". The blade retains it's bright finish for all but the last 2" of the blade. About 2" from the tip of the blade on the obverse side and 1" on the reverse side of the blade are rusted and show active rust now. The blade has been sharpened at some point long ago, from the tip of the blade 13" back toward the ricasso and still holds an edge. The reverse ricasso is stamped GEBR. WEYERSBERG in an arc over SOLINGEN. The obverse ricasso is not stamped. The handle has a iron cross guard with a muzzle ring with quillion at the top and a hook with ball on the end at the bottom. The pressed black checkered leather grips are in very good condition and are retained by iron pins. The grips show wear from normal handling, but are not abused. The bird head pommel and cross guard have some of the original bright finish remaining, but have more of a steel gray patina. The reverse side of the crossed guard is stamped with the bayonet serial number 57960, the obverse side is stamped with the unit information 40 B 277. The external spring type release works fine and this bayonet will properly secure to a Model 1867 Remington Rolling Block rifle. The bayonet comes with it's original leather scabbard. The iron throat and drag are securely attached to the scabbard body. The stitching is still tight and unbroken. If you have a pre WWI collection, especially Danish, this Danish Model 1867 bayonet will make a nice addition.
