1899 Admiral Dewey New York Celebration Medal

This is a celebration medal of Admiral Dewey commemorating his return to New York in September, 1899. He was known as the "Hero of Manila", where he had engaged the Spanish fleet there and destroyed it to the last ship, suffering only one casualty himself. The eight point medallion encases a double sided silver disk. It is suspended from a red, white and blue ribbon, but the ribbon is in tatters. One side of the disk shows a bust of Admiral Dewey with the words DEWEY CELEBRATION in an arc above the admiral and NEW YORK in an arc below him. The date of SEPT 28-30 is on a scroll on either side of the bust along with the year 1899. The reverse of the disk shows Dewey's flagship, the Olympia. The brass medallion is slightly tarnished to the left of Dewey's image, and spotted around the perimeter of the Olympia. While the ribbon is no longer capable of supporting the medal, the medal itself still displays well. This is a scarce piece of Spanish American war memorabilia and will display nice with your other Span-Am pieces.
