This is a Carte de Vista of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Born at the Stratford Hall Plantation in Westmoreland County, Virginia on 19 January, 1807. Lee was the fifth of six children born to Harry and Anne Lee. Lee attended the United States Military Academy and graduated 2nd out of a class of 45 in 1829. His first assignment after graduating from the academy was as a Brevet 2nd Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers. Lee served with distinction during the Mexican American War, earning brevet promotions all the way up to Colonel, but his regular Army rank remained Captain of Engineers. In 1852 Robert E. Lee was appointed Superintendent of the Military Academy at West Point. After his three year tenure as Superintendent of West Point, Lee was appointed as second in command of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment in Texas, serving under Colonel Albert Sidney Johnston. In March of 1861 Lee was promoted to Colonel and placed in command of the 1st Cavalry Regiment. With the outlook of coming war, Lee was offered a senior command in the Union Army with the rank of Major General. Instead of accepting the promotion, Robert E Lee submitted his resignation from the US Army on 20 April, 1861. Robert E. Lee would go on to command the Army of Northern Virginia and become one of the greatest commanders this country has ever produced. This CDV is in good condition. Lee's is wearing a Confederate uniform, but it still has his rank of Colonel on the collar. Robert E. Lee never wore the star of a Confederate General, instead choosing to wear the highest rank he attained in the US Army. The image shows Lee with his shoulders slanting to the right of the camera. There is nothing printed on the front of the cdv. There is no back mark or canceled postage stamp on the back of the image. The top corners of the image have been trimed off to give it a rounded look. The image is free of smudges, stains, rips, tears or any other imperfections. If you collect Civil War images, your collection won't be complete without this one!
