This is a Model 1851 Colt Navy cap and ball revolver. The serial number 68280 puts this one in the production year of 1857. The 7 1/2" barrel has a clean bore and visible rifling. The single line ADDRESS COL. SAMl COLT NEW YORK CITY address is clearly visible. The Colt patent mark is worn, but both words are still legible. The cylinder scene is worn as well, but the naval engagement scene is also still visible, even the ENGAGED 16 MAY 1843 along the front edge. The serial numbers are very crisp and match, with the exception of the loading lever, cylinder and the wedge. The cylinder numbers appear to match the rest of the gun, but under magnification are different. The loading lever and wedge are unmarked but appear to be period replacements. All three pieces have been with the gun for a long time. The gun has an overall plum patina, with some bluing and case colors showing through. The mechanics of this old Colt work perfectly. All of the silver wash has worn off the trigger guard and back strap. The exposed brass has taken on a medium golden patina that is very eye pleasing. The letter P has been engraved in cursive on the bottom of the back strap. The walnut grips have the majority of the original varnish remaining, with a couple of small bumps and dings on the sides of the grips. They fit the gun like a glove, are not cartouched and have no repairs. This is a beautiful gun that could have fought with either side during the war of northern aggression. Regardless of which side it resided with, this one will make a great addition to your Civil War weapons collection, or your Colt revolver collection.
