This is a Sound Protective Helmet (SPH-4) flight helmet from the Vietnam War period. This series of flight helmet was designed to replace the APH-5 and the AFH-1 flight helmets that were currently in use. The SPH-4 helmet had superior sound protection over the other two helmets, but did not provide much in the way of impact protection. The fiberglass shell is supplemented on the inside by a polystyrene foam energy absorbing liner. It has a sling suspension liner with nape strap with a single snap on each side fitted to studs on a retention harness. The chin strap was designed to support 150 pounds, and has a single snap on each side. The speakers are mounted in black molded ear cups that helped provide sound protection. The boom mike is the gray M87/A1C and is dated Aug 72. The paper label inside the helmet identifies this helmet as, "8415-144-4981/REGULAR/DAAG25-69-C-6881/GENTEX CORPORATION". The single visor is clear and is undamaged. This one has been customized by the crewman who wore it. On the front of the shell just below the track for the visor locking knob is the name W. E. POST on a gray printed label. Above each ear cup is an American flag decal and a shamrock painted in green is on the back. Tied to the rear of the suspension system system is a green mesh scarf. Apparently Mr. Post was of Irish decent! I have done no research on the name, but this is most definitely a Vietnam War period flight helmet that's all original with the exception of an update mike. If you have a Vietnam aviation collection this certainly needs to be in it.
