This is an excavated Union General Service button that came into the shop recently from a local collection. The button was recovered in Randolph County, Missouri near the site of the Battle of Silver Creek. The battle took place on 8 January, 1862 when four Union Cavalry regiments under the command of Major W.M.G. Torrence assaulted a Missouri State Guard base commanded by Colonel John A. Poindexter in Randolph County, Missouri. Torrence's 400-500 man cavalry force overwhelmed the 1,000 Confederates within the camp, capturing the majority of the defenders and large quantities of supplies during the assault on 8 January, 1862. The coat size button has the back mark of WATERBURY BUTTON CO. The button is of two piece construction and has some damage on the back. It has been pushed in and is partially missing. Amazingly the button still retains the shank, and it is standing tall. The button has a mix of an absolute beautiful chocolate brown patina mixed with some remaining gilt. This button would make a great piece for the beginning collector in your family!
